I am often asked what is sports massage? Sports massage is the queen of technique combinations, encompassing anything from varied pressure and speed, stretching and myofascial release, along with the use of arnica oil, products like Biofreeze and essential oils for muscular pain relief. Sports massage may use heat or cold packs or a combination of both. What causes are muscles to hurt so badly? Our muscles work under two conditions: anaerobic (without oxygen) and aerobic (with oxygen). Our bodies prefer to work under aerobic conditions where we have plenty of oxygen feeding our muscles. When our bodies require oxygen faster than it is delivered working musc7les generate energy anaerobically. The byproduct of anaerobic exercise is lactic acid. The more quickly lactic acid is produced the more quickly our muscles burn and fatigue. When skiing or riding it is easy to stay in an anaerobic condition – we ride the chair lift up and ski/ride as fast as possible back down. Our bodies are not moving slow enough for aerobic energy conversion. Our muscles work at an oxygen deficit. Muscle soreness experienced 24-48 hours later is Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness. This is due to small tears in the muscle and connective tissue resulting from eccentric contraction – lengthening muscle groups. For every muscle that is contracted, the opposing muscle eccentrically contracts. Skiing/riding strains muscle groups primarily due to the intensity in which we participate. Why does sports massage work? It is as simple as it sounds. Massage increases blood circulation bringing oxygen and fresh nutrients to muscles and removes metabolic waste. Oxygen and nutrients help repair damaged cells in our muscles which speeds muscle recovery. Massage in combination with drinking electrolytes and water will give you the best advantage to play it again the next day! It seems like just when you get in the groove of summer it is fall. This summer in particular just flew by. Maybe it was the late start, maybe it was the rain, but in an instant it was Labor Day and Copper Country. Four days after the show I was in the operating room sewing back together my left shoulder.
There is nothing like surgery to create pause in your life. My shoulder has been injured for years - over two, in fact. I set aside all those things I wanted to do but never had time to do for just this occasion. Exciting things, like re-writing the employee handbook, a new procedure's manual, putting together a list of all of my vendors along with phone numbers, logins, and passwords. And, yes, I did read that you should never write down your logins and passcodes, but then I'd never remember them and with them written I only have to remember where I put the piece of paper they are written on! Another thing I've saved to do this fall is write. Write down my thoughts of the past, my hopes for the future. Write about the way my dog runs in his sleep chasing squirrels and how that wakes my other dog who just stares at his brother wondering what in the heck he is doing. Write about the injustices of the world and hope. I've saved this time for me. It seems odd to tell my readers and those that are visiting my business website that I'm taking time for me. But then, what is massage if it is not taking some time for yourself? When I opened Summit Massage & Wellness Studio I envisioned a place where people would come to feel better, get better, relax, de-stress, work out the kinks and swap stories from the mountain. I put "wellness" into the title on purpose. Someone once said to me that the reason they liked coming to our studio was because the therapists looked the part - they looked like they take care of themselves. This fall is my turn. I want to be 110% this winter for my clients. My heart and soul is in Summit Massage & Wellness Studio. We had an incredible first year and have a great staff of therapists that are available this fall. Take time this fall for you. See you in the winter! It feels like closing day should officially kick off mud season, but this year is different. We received 355 inches of snow - over 29 feet! This is a mind blowing amount of snow. Copper still has an 84-inch base at mid mountain. This past weekend the lifts spun one last time. That is just too late for mud season to start. We want flowers in our gardens by May, at least that is wishful thinking as I looked at the grass withering under mounds of snow the other day crying out "help me...". The neighbors have fled for the desert. I fled to the northwest where at least the water falls from the sky as rain. Signs are everywhere that indicate mud season -CLOSED. This is the time of year when the locals re-fuel for the next season. On my travels I continue to spot things that will make wonderful additions to the studio from handmade heat wraps to locally produced organic fruit bars from Oregon. I've sampled wine from Palisades, CO to the Hood River region in Oregon that will go splendidly with our girls weekend packages. And the pie -- south of Portland there is a barn serving daily "happy hour" pie from 9-11 with $1 slices and coffee. Breakfast never tasted so good! I visited Lavender Ranch in Biggs, California where we will now be ordering all of our organic lavender essential oils. I experimented using this oil with a new lip balm recipe which was quite nice. I am excited to bring back more of small town America to the studio from the artists that make up the backbone of this wonderful country. As I head back to Colorado later this week, I bring with me a renewed spirit, tons of ideas, and completely revamped menu of services and retail shop. We look forward to seeing all of our wonderful clients and customers when we open on June 13th! Enjoy the season in rewind ... Today as I was walking my dog I thought it looked a lot more like January than April, yet in less than 2 weeks the mountain will close and the 2013/2014 winter season will be over. It has been quite a season - tons of snow, tons of events, new friends and new business. Thank you to everyone who came by this year to take a look, have a massage, or stay for a chat. We have some specials this month. Check out our closing day specials. Tomorrow promises warmer weather and sunshine. I'll be catching the skier cross at the USASA National Championships - go Caleb (bib #414). Sunsations starts this weekend. Sun is in the title, so be prepared to catch some rays and have some fun listening to live music. Whatever your pleasure, get outside and enjoy! Opening ceremonies will soon kick-off the start to the Winter Olympics in Russia. Like most kids I dreamed of going to the Olympics. I wanted to swim my way to a gold medal. I swam a lot! Recently I was asked what sport I'd participate in if I could choose any sport. Downhill skiing, of course. Skiing fast. Although the jumps certainly look fun too! Kelly Clark, Copper Mountain Olympic Qualifying Event, 2013. I've been teaching in Golden since Thursday and just returned to Summit County - WOW! And then today, what an awesome event - 10 to 20 inches of fresh powder by tomorrow.
Get out there an enjoy. While today is not an office Copper "Snow Day" it is definitely snowing so be prepared for fresh turns! |
